New helmets can reduce explosion brain damage

According to the American physicist organizational network reported that MIT researchers have developed a new type of helmet with a mask, allegedly this helmet can reduce the war and other reasons caused by explosions caused by traumatic brain injury ( TBI) from occurring. Research published in the United States, "National Academy of Sciences" on.

In order to study the impact of explosions on the human brain, MIT associate professor of aerospace Hertz and colleagues used a sophisticated three-dimensional computer model of the shock wave through the case of the brain were simulated. To make the model more realistic, with the U.S. Walter Reed Army Medical Center neurologist David Moore cooperation, the use of magnetic resonance imaging of the way to get a head feature data (such as the skull, soft tissue, brain spinal fluid, white matter, etc.), and obtained through the experiments of chemical energy released by explosions, electromagnetic pulses, and kinetic data on the impact on the surrounding objects. With this model, the researchers hope to determine ways to reduce brain damage, brain damage will be caused by the war's casualties to a minimum.
Through computer models, researchers found that the air compressed to 10 times the normal sea level pressure in front of an explosion is enough to power through the face, skull and soft tissues of the brain unprotected passed. To deal with this impact, the researchers designed a called the Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH) of the new protective gear, helmets, compared with the ordinary, this adds a helmet made of transparent polycarbonate mask. Experiments show that the helmet was delayed to some extent, the head shock wave arrival time, and reduce the area of the brain affected by the impact.
